The establishment of a state-of-the-art USABMX race facility and an all-wheel pump track in the Irvine Great Park.
More than 30 years ago, some friends and I moved to Orange County, California in pursuit of our BMX dreams. Destination: Orange Y BMX.
The year was 1989 and when we arrived the 17 and over expert class was stacked with SoCal local talent. Three nights a week we would chase our idols around the infamous track, facing off with the best of the best. For us, and the tens of thousands of racers, families and friends that passed through those gates over a 30+ year span, the memories made on those warm summer nights are priceless.
We had thought those days would never end. But in late 2016, the famous Orange Y BMX track dropped its starting gate for the last time and our beloved BMX track was torn down. After more than 30 years as the number one track in the entire country, "Orange" is now history.
The City of Irvine also hosted some of the earliest BMX races in the early 1970s and again during the 1980s. In fact, the City of Irvine played a key role in helping to establish the sport of BMX, so it is only fitting that we now re-establish an Irvine BMX track and all-wheel pump track at the Great Park.
Despite a six-year absence from Orange County, BMX racing has continued to experience increased popularity year over year. Now bigger and better than ever, BMX racing today is a highly competitive and well-refined Olympic sport. The sport of BMX racing provides an alternative to traditional stick and ball team sports that are well-represented at the Great Park while providing individual riders the same benefits and character-building life lessons.
So, what does it take to start a BMX track? The formula is relatively simple - a few determined advocates, community support, a detailed plan, some funding, a land lease, and a bit of luck.
I have agreed to serve in pursuit of this mission as a way of giving back to the community that welcomed me and my friends 30+ years ago. I know first-hand the positive impact BMX has had in my life, instilling confidence, sportsmanship, self-reliance and determination. Re-establishing Irvine BMX will provide immeasurable benefits for generations to come.
I believe that by working together and with the support of USABMX we can bring a state-of-the-art national level BMX race facility and pump track to Irvine, California! Challenge accepted!
